Upcoming Weekend Events

This Friday evening, the third Salutations to the Virgin Mary will be chanted at 7:00 p.m. with a discussion to follow.

This Sunday will mark the third Sunday of the Great and Holy Fast – it is the mid-period of Lent and is marked with a beautiful procession of the Holy Cross.  We will be blessed to have with us Deacon Christodoulos Wallace, a recently ordained clergyman serving at Saint Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, Virginia.  For information about the feastday, follow this link… http://lent.goarch.org/sunday_of_the_cross/learn/

This Sunday, in the Youth Room, at 10:00 AM the 7th-12th grade Sunday School students will participate in the annual Saint Chrysostom Oratorical Festival.

The Junior Division (7-9 grade) will present a 3-4 minute speech from 5 possible topics, and the Senior Division (10-12 grade) will present a 4-5 minute speech from a different 5 possible topics.

Three judges will evaluate each participant in both content and delivery.  The top 2 Parish speakers will represent the Cathedral at the District competition at a later date.  The Oratorical Program is an opportunity for Sunday School students to express their thoughts about their faith and the Church.  Visitors and parents are welcomed to attend.

PASCHAL BREAD and COOKIES:  The Philoptochos Society is sponsoring a sale of tsoureki at $8/loaf and decorated boxes containing 3 dozen koulourakia at $10/box for your Paschal table. These items will be sold on Palm Sunday, March 28th following the Divine Liturgy in the foyer of the Father Constantine Monios Social Hall.  Please contact Georgeann Morekas (443.845.1176, gnmorekas@comcast.net) or Pat Bartsocas (bartsocaspat@hotmail.com) with questions or if you would like to pre-order these items.  Proceeds from this sale benefit the society’s philanthropic projects.

On March 7, Sunday of the Holy Cross, there will be a community sponsored coffee hour in the Father Constantine Monios Hall.  Donations of lenten dips, snacks or baked goods and fruit are appreciated.  Help is also needed with setting/cleaning up and serving coffee.  Please contact Mary Kariotis at malama@comcast.net.

Upcoming Activities and Announcements

Saturday, February 20, The Third Saturday of Souls will be chanted at the Cathedral at 10:00 AM.  Services WILL NOT BE AT THE CEMETERY CHAPEL due to the ice and snow conditions.

On Saturday evening, the Mission’s Wine Tasting Fundraising Event will take place at the Annunciation Orthodox Center.  Information can be found at www.ocmm.org.  Our guest for the evening will be Father Jorge Faraj from the Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, along with their Parish Council President and Philoptochos President.

On Sunday, February 21, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, will be celebrated.  Father Jorge will be with us and will offer the homily after the Gospel.  All children are encourged to bring their icons to the Cathedral for the procession.  Information for the Sunday of Orthodoxy may be obtained at http://lent.goarch.org/sunday_of_orthodoxy/learn/.

Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone, but we can still be Souper Bowl Champs on Sunday, February 21.  Please bring $1 and a canned good item, and drop them in the big soup pot located in the Narthex.  GOYANS will collect the money to donate to IOCC and the canned items for the Franciscan Center.  Help us become Souper Bowl Champions!

Sunday evening, the regional Orthodox celebration will take place at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saints Mary Magdalene and Markella in Harford County, beginning at 6:00 PM.  Directions and other information for the service can be found at www.gochc.org  Father Jorge will be the guest homilst that evening.

Please also note that due to such adverse weather conditions, the Health Kits will be sent to Haiti following services on February 28th.  You may log onto www.iocc.org for additonal information.

The streets surrounding the Cathedral have been cleared, the parking lots are open.  You may now park at three locations for church, the flat lot, the former parking garage, the University of Baltimore (U of B) flat lot next to the former garage and the parking lot directly behind the AOC (Med Chi) and Jewish Charities.  The U of B, Med Chi and Jewish Chairities lots are available for you for Sunday parking only.  Our own lots are for Cathedral use only.

Let’s start off Lent properly by attending the various services and being on time.  It would be a wonderful witness to our brothers and sisters from Honduras and to each other to have a full church from the beginning of services!

Philoptochos Fundraiser

The Cathedral Philoptochos Society will be selling tsourekia and boxed koulourakia on Sunday March, 28 as a Paschal fundraising activity.  Your assistance is needed to prepare the koulourakia.   We will be baking on Saturday, March 13th beginning at 10:00am in the Mentis Room.  A light lunch will be served.  Please direct your questions to Georgeann Morekas.

UPDATED: IOCC Health Kits for Haiti Extended to February 28

UPDATED: Due to such adverse weather conditions in the area recently, the Health Kits will be sent to Haiti following services on February 28th.  You may log onto www.iocc.org for additonal information.

Many of our faithful are responding to the crisis in Haiti. You are being challenged to bring 2,500 health kits that will be able to assist those in need. The following items are requested:

Please carefully follow the instructions below.

Buy a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure and fill it with the following items:

  • One hand towel
  • One washcloth
  • One comb
  • One metal nail file or nail clipper
  • One bar of soap (bath size, new and wrapped in original packaging)
  • One toothbrush (NO TOOTHPASTE)
  • Six Band-Aids

Do not add additional items, cash, notes or anything else. If you have extra items and are unable to fill a bag, you are more than welcome to bring those items to the Cathedral.

All kits will be sent to Church World Services, who in turn, will send them to Haiti. The kits are requested to be delivered to the Cathedral no later than Sunday, February 7, 2010.

Fourth Annual OCMM Wine Tasting Fundraiser

Join us for the Orthodox Christian Missions of Maryland’s Fourth Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 7pm to 10pm in the Preston Room at the Annunciation Orthodox Center.
